24. Budget Outside Sounds that Require No Thinking

There are a number of ways to play ‘outside’ the key but this is by far my favorite as it requires absolutely no thought. You may have looked at the wholetone scale, but probably dismissed it as something that only jazzers use, or found no real application for it. I like to use to use to get that temporary ‘out’ sound over any chord, yes ANY chord. The wholetone scale contains the intervals 1, 2, 3, #4, #5, b7 which is a strange enough collection of tones on its own. Rather than learn a new scale pattern, we can take advantage of the fact that the wholetone scale is symmetrical, and play it up and down one string. Here it is in A:
